Easy Ways to Conserve Water in Your Home

For more than 50 years in the plumbing industry in York Region, including Richmond Hill and Thornhill, the plumbers at Aaron & Son have offered a wide range of plumbing and drain services. In that time frame, our society has changed from undervaluing our water resources to focusing on the increasing need for water conservation for both environment and economic reasons.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Canadians use more water per person than any other country in the world with the exception to the United States. Here are a few ideas you can use to save water inside your home on a daily basis:

Stop Leaks: to stop faucets from leaking – call Aaron & Son Plumbing & Drain Services today and one of our experienced plumbers will fix your leak.

Change the Flow: a low-flow showerhead will use about half the water. Call Aaron & Son Plumbing & Drain Services today and one of our experienced plumbers will gladly install a new showerhead for you.

Replace High Water Consumption Toilets: consider buying and installing a water-efficient toilet. At Aaron & Son Plumbing we carry a wide range of styles and models of toilets. Call Aaron & Son Plumbing & Drain Services today and one of our experienced plumbers will supply and/or install your new water-efficient toilet.

Turn off: the water after you wet your toothbrush, rinse your razor, cleaning vegetables or when washing dishes by hand. Be aware of your consumption and waste.

Outdoors: practice smart gardening or try Xeriscaping. Native plants will use less water and be more resistant to local plant diseases. Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants. Water during the early parts of the day; avoid watering when it’s windy, and harvest rainwater with rain barrels.

Other ideas include purchasing water-efficient appliances and products with an Energy Star rating and the WaterSense label. Take advantage of government bylaws and rebate programs; Toronto offers a rebate on the purchase of a low-flow toilet, for example.

Finally, just use less. Dishwashers use less water than the manual method, use your appliances only for full loads, fill baths only halfway, take shorter showers, and use a kiddie pool instead of a sprinkler to help children cool off in the summer.

Water conservation comes naturally when everyone in the family is aware of its importance, and parents take the time to teach children some of the simple water-saving methods around the home which can make a big difference.
